MORA Awards Scholarships

The Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency (MORA) has awarded 16 – $500 scholarships to high school seniors across Mississippi that have a belief in the lifesaving and life improving gifts that organ, eye and tissue donation can be for others.

“We are excited to award these 16 scholarships to high school seniors that believe in our mission to improve and save lives through organ, eye and tissue donation,” said Kevin Stump, the Chief Executive Officer of MORA. “Whether these high school seniors have a connection to donation through a personal experience or just a strong belief in the Gift of Donation, we want to show our appreciation through these scholarships. We know that these seniors will continue to promote donation at their next level of education. Their testimonials can be more powerful than any brochure or written material that they could share.”

Today, there are 123,000+ men, women, and children waiting for a lifesaving transplant. Over 100,000 of these patients are awaiting kidney transplants. A new patient is added to the national transplant waiting list every 10 minutes and an average of 21 people die each day awaiting a lifesaving transplant that never comes. In 2014, Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency recovered 198 organs for transplant from 61 donors. There were also 218 tissue donors. Currently there are nearly 1,500 Mississippians on the organ transplant waiting list with over 1,300 of those waiting on a kidney transplant. MORA wants everyone to know one organ donor can save eight lives and one tissue donor can save or improve the lives of 50 recipients or more. Join the 709,000+ Mississippians who are currently on the MS Donor Registry by registering as an organ, eye and tissue donor at www.donatelifems.org.
