Thank you Donate Life Month Sponsors!

Sponsor BoardAs Donate Life Month has come to a close, we just want to say thank you. Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, and contributed to all of the events and awareness throughout the state this month. Because of your efforts more people have registered as organ, eye and tissue donors, more people are having the donation conversation with their friends and families, more people understand the life saving benefits of the gift of life, and more lives on the National Transplant Waiting List will be saved. Thank you especially to our sponsors! They help us make this month’s outreach possible.

An Overview of National Donate Life Month 2016

The Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency (MORA) recognized National Donate Life Month in April, by hosting a record-breaking number of events, joining 27 hospital partners across the state to celebrate the gifts of organ, eye and tissue donation with balloon releases, Donate Life flag raising ceremonies, community luncheons, and registration tables to afford the public with an opportunity to sign the donor registry. This was the largest number of events held in Mississippi during National Donate Life Month in MORA’s history. Among hospital celebrations, the University of Mississippi Medical Center, the home of Mississippi’s only transplant facility, partnered with MORA to host the second annual Legacy Lap. The event brought together both transplant recipients and donor families to celebrate the miracle of transplantation and to honor those who have given of themselves to save and heal the lives of others with the gift of life.

In addition to hospital events, the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency hosted community events that reached all corners of the state to promote awareness and share education about the need for organ, eye and tissue donation. Promotional nights with the Mississippi Braves and Biloxi Shuckers offered the opportunity to honor the donor families and volunteers of the Wilbanks family and the Cartwright family, respectively, and gave fans an exposure to the world of donation they may have never experienced. Impressions of Life, an event that brought together over 90 donor family members, transplant recipients, and their families to paint in memory of a loved one or donor who shared the gift of life, was expanded to three cities for the first time in MORA’s history: Tupelo, Hattiesburg and Ridgleland.

The highlight of the month was the 5th Anniversary Racing for Donation 8k Run/Walk and Celebration of Life Picnic that surpassed milestones with more than 500 participants and raised the greatest amount of donations in the event’s history, all to the benefit of the MORA Public Education Fund.

MORA would like to thank our sponsors, like Organ Recovery Systems, for making this the best April ever!
