National Donate Life Month (NDLM) was instituted by Donate Life America and its partnering organizations, which includes Donate Life Mississippi, in 2003. Celebrated in April every year, NDLM features an entire month of local, regional and national donation awareness activities to encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to honor those heroes who have left a legacy that saved lives through the gift of donation.
This year, Donate Life America choose the sunflower as the national symbol of National Donate Life Month. The seeds of one sunflower has the potential to create an entirely new field of flowers. Just like the sunflower, we have the opportunity to give the gift of life when we register our decision to be an organ, eye and tissue donor. One organ donor can save and the heal the lives of up to 8 people through organ donation and countless others through tissue donation. A chance at new life gives beyond the recipient, and touches their friends and family for future generations.
Due to rain the Legacy Lap has been moved from the lawn facing State Street to the Norman C. Nelson Student Union on the campus of the University of Mississippi Medical Center. This is the location notated on the invitation below as the location to use in case of inclement weather. We hope to see you there!
Please join the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency (MORA), the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital, and the University Transplant Guild for a special afternoon to celebrate those who have been personally touched by organ, eye, and tissue donation. The 2nd Annual Legacy Lap will be held at the Norman C. Nelson Student Union on the campus of the University of Mississippi Medical Center Friday, April 15th, 2016. The event will kick off shortly after 11:30 a.m. with a press conference to share the importance of registering to be an organ, eye and tissue donor and to share stories of donation. Donor families, transplant recipients, those on the National Transplant Waiting List, and their families and friends, will join staff to release balloons in honor of those who have given the Ultimate Gift of Life. Then, attendees will take the Legacy Lap, a walk in honor of the Wall of Heroes. The Wall of Heroes is a special memorial wall at UMMC that recognizes organ, eye and tissue donors who left a legacy of hope to help others in need. The Legacy Lap will conclude back at the Norman C. Nelson Student Union, where food and refreshments will be served.
In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved indoors to the Norman C. Nelson Student Union. Parking for the event will be available in Parking Lot D beside the Norman C. Nelson Student Union and Garage A beside University Hospital. Please find directions below:
